The first child born through use of Assisted Reproduction Technology is now over 25 years old. The doubts surrounding the process generally stemmed from concerns over the technology. As those questions have been answered over the past 25 years, IVF and ART have become more acceptable.
In-vitro fertilization requires the out-of-body fertilization of an egg by a sperm, and the transfer of the created embryos into an intended parent or surrogate. An interesting trend among couples using Assisted Reproduction Technology is the increasing occurrence of multiple births.
While laboratories using Assisted Reproduction Technologies continue to improve, it is important for intended parents to do their own research as well. They should know the statistics on their selected laboratory or physician, usually available online or upon request from the facility. This research will inform intended parents about the success that the lab has had with particular technologies, as well as the success with particular donors and parents grouped by age.
