Ohio Adoption Attorney: In Ohio and Interstate
If you are going to be part of the traditional surrogacy process (whereby a woman carries your child created with her egg), you may have to plan for the adoption of that baby upon birth. I am Ellen Essig, Attorney and Counselor, and from my Cincinnati law office, I handle adoptions for people involved in traditional surrogacy as well as those pursuing non-surrogacy adoptions. With over 20 years of experience as an adoption attorney, I can help you throughout the entire adoption process.

Interstate adoptions present clients with challenges. In order for a child to leave one state and come to Ohio or vice versa, the Interstate Compact for the Placement of Children, or ICPC, must approve the placement.
Compliance with the ICPC can be complicated, and you need an advocate who understands the challenges ahead and the options available to you. You will need the approval of the ICPC whether you are the adopting parent or the placing parent, and I skillfully represent either party in these adoption cases.
No state has the authority to complete an interstate adoption on its own except in the adoption of close family members. Usually, you must work closely with the other state in order to facilitate a successful adoption plan. Regardless of whether your child is coming to Ohio or leaving, I work with attorneys across the country to make the adoption process successful for my clients. While adoptions are generally finalized in the receiving state, the sending state is responsible to provide the birth mother’s consent to adoption, and resolve any legal issues regarding the birth father. I will make sure both sides work together to complete the adoption process successfully and in a timely manner.
Expenses of Interstate Adoptions
There are certain expenses involved in interstate adoption. It is important for any parent to consider the variety of costs, including lawyer fees and home studies for the adoptive family. In the state of Ohio, you will also need to budget for a birth parent assessment.
